In today’s world, Internet access is almost ubiquitous, and we often don’t think about connection security, especially when it comes to free Wi-Fi networks. While this is very convenient, we must always remember the risks and take specific measures to minimize negative consequences.

Why Can Free Wi-Fi Networks Be Dangerous?

The main reason is that in public networks, almost all information is transmitted unencrypted unless the resource you are connecting to has provided additional protection. This means that attackers can easily intercept and analyze your traffic, collecting passwords, credit card numbers, personal messages, and other sensitive data.

How to Protect Yourself When Using Public Wi-Fi Networks?

  1. Check the network name. Before connecting to Wi-Fi, ask the workers of the place for the network’s name and password. This will help avoid connecting to fake Wi-Fi created by cybercriminals. Fake networks often have names similar to real ones, only with different combinations.
  2. Avoid unknown networks. If you are unsure who owns the Wi-Fi hotspot, avoiding connecting to it is better. Criminals can create fake networks to intercept user data.
  3. Choose networks manually. Turn off automatic connection to available networks to have more control over your connections. Automatic connection may cause your device to connect to an unsafe or fake network.
  4. Do not share confidential information. Avoid using public networks to transmit important data, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and personal messages. If you need to exchange confidential information, use a secure communication channel like VPN.
  5. Do not access financial and/or high-security sites. Try to avoid authorizing critical sites, such as online banking, on public networks. If necessary, use a VPN connection and make sure that the connection is over the secure HTTPS protocol. This method and protocol will help encrypt your traffic and make it more secure.
  6. End your sessions. Always log out of your accounts after using online services on public networks. This will help protect your data if your device is compromised.
  7. Turn off Wi-Fi when it’s not needed. This helps avoid unauthorized connections to your device.
  8. Disable file sharing. Protect your data by turning off file and document sharing.
  9. Join cybersecurity educational programs. Regularly update your cybersecurity knowledge and participate in relevant training programs.

Considering these tips, you can take advantage of the convenience of free Wi-Fi networks while minimizing risks to your digital security. Remember, your awareness and attentiveness are key to ensuring your online safety.
